The Minister of Health and Social Services has dismissed what she called misleading narratives about her turning a blind eye to the alleged illegal import of medicines into Namibia.

Dr. Esparance Luvindao informed the National Assembly that she had informed the Namibia Medicines Regulatory Council and other parties of interest in the supply chain to get to the bottom of the alleged irregularities.

The Affirmative Repositioning Movement MP Job Amupanda accused the minister of being fully aware of the illegal imports of medicine, conflict of interest by some members of the Council, and other dubious dealings.

Dr. Luvindao revealed that she had written a letter to the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the alleged entry and sale of unregistered medicine in the country and the use of the emergency procurement system to facilitate theft from the government.

The investigation into the allegations aims to restore public trust in the government's procurement system.

Dr. Luvindao also requested the Minister of Justice and Labour Relations to nominate a team of legal experts to provide the regulatory council with legal assistance.

The AR leader reminded her that the health of the people should not be frivolously handled by politicians.

He also challenged the minister to explain why she met with representatives of Phabufarm after announcing concerns about the company in the National Assembly.

Dr Luvindao stated that she is investigating the matter.
