President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has expressed appreciation for the European Union’s continued support toward Namibia’s development, particularly in agriculture, energy, governance, and education.
This follows a courtesy call by EU Ambassador to Namibia, Ana Beatriz Martins, who outlined ongoing collaborative efforts during her meeting with the President at State House.
“I am obviously focusing on Namibia, and there’s been a lot. We have events to inaugurate projects related to the various areas we cover—from green energy sectors, green industrialisation, governance, education programmes, and agriculture—so we have a lot going on at the moment,” Martins said. “I am very pleased that we have activities and good partnerships. That is where we can help make a difference in Namibia.”
In response, President Nandi-Ndaitwah welcomed the EU’s continued partnership, particularly in agriculture and capacity building, which she described as vital areas for Namibia’s growth.
“You talk about areas of focus—agriculture—which is really top on our agenda because we want to ensure food security,” said the President. “We know our limitations as a dry country, but we can talk about smart agriculture that is specifically designed to assist countries negatively impacted by climate change. That goes very well with green development.”
The President also reflected on the importance of governance and institutional strength, referencing Namibia’s recent peaceful transition of power following the passing of former President Hage Geingob.
“I am glad the EU is focusing on such areas as capacity building, governance, and strong institutions,” she said. “You know, our late President Hage was strong on institutions, and they served us very well. We didn’t know that last year we would find ourselves in that situation, but due to strong systems and institutions, we managed to go through that difficult time.”
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both Namibia and the EU to work together on shared goals and sustainable development.
