Zambia on Friday celebrated its 61st independence in style.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, with his special guest Daniel Chapo, presided over the celebrations in Lusaka.

The event started on a sombre note as the two leaders led multitudes that included senior government officials and members of the diplomatic corps in laying wreaths at the Freedom Statue in memory of those that lost their lives in the liberation struggle.

On the eve of the independence, the Zambian head of state, as per tradition, pardoned 164 inmates as part of his discretion.

Later at the State House, celebrations took centre stage.

Several people alive and posthumously were honoured with medals.

Former leaders, including former vice presidents, attended the celebrations.
