The |Hai-|Khaua clan, a sub-tribe of the Nama people, has appointed a new deputy Gaob.

Senior traditional councillor of the |Hai-|Khaua Traditional Authority, Michael Haman, was installed into the position during a ceremony held at Berseba on Saturday.

The deputy Gaob position had been vacant since the death of the late Deputy Kaptein Stefanus Goliath two years ago.

Haman was appointed to the role after the incumbent Kaptein, Johannes Isaack, recommended him to the Elders Council, who then endorsed him.

This came after the Elders Council nominated four candidates from among the 12 traditional councillors and submitted the list to Kaptein Isaack, who was asked to choose his deputy.

Among the four candidates were Elizabeth Visser, Johan Frederick and Anton Isaack.

The incumbent Gaob, Johannes Isaack, presented instruments of office to Deputy Gaob Haman.

In his inaugural address to the clan, Deputy Gaob Haman appealed for unity.

"The |Hai-|khaua people have survived the crown through generations, not because individuals were strong. But because we stood together as one community and one nation. To come together is a beginning; to stay together is progress; to work together is success. This truth applies to every part of our lives."

The newly appointed Deputy Gaob further highlighted community engagement, self-sustained development, infrastructure and visibility, cultural heritage and partnership building as key focus areas for his first 100 days in office.

"My vision is simple: to serve our people with integrity, to strengthen unity and to lay a foundation for a more prosperous future."
