The Ministry of Health and Social Services has reaffirmed that it is making rehabilitation and assistive technology services available across the country.

Currently such services are offered free of charge only at seven hospitals.

Speaking during the commemoration of International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day, Acting Deputy Executive Director Johannes Gaeseb emphasised that prosthetics and orthotics services aim to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities through Universal Health Coverage.

"Decentralisation of these services will ultimately lead to a reduced long waiting list of people waiting to get these services, as well as long-distance travel to access services. The Ministry has taken note of the rehabilitation needs in the population that are unmet, and it is a well-known fact that the unmet needs will grow if no significant action steps are taken."

Rehabilitation and assistive technology services are offered free of charge at Windhoek, Rundu, Oshakati, Outapi, Katima Mulilo, Keetmanshoop and Swakopmund.

In addition, outreach teams visit communities every three months to extend these services to rural areas.

A long-time beneficiary, Ndapewa Kamati, shared how her prosthetic device has transformed her life.

"This device, or these artificial legs – I'm sorry, I'm using artificial legs, but this device doesn't matter; it's legs, legs, arms. It's providing us with dignity, restoring our ability and confidence, and for us it's not even a device in our life; it's part of us. Without it, it's like we can't function. Individually, it provides confidence in appearance in the community, since if you don't have your arm or your leg, it will be difficult. You won't feel free to appear in public."

She also highlighted ongoing challenges, including limited access to quality materials and products, which can pose safety risks to users.

To strengthen the sector, funds have been made available for students wanting to pursue studies in prosthetics, orthotics, and other rehabilitation-related fields.

Applications are available at the Ministry and will close at the end of this month.
