The Wagdaar informal settlement on the outskirts of Swakopmund received two new solar high mast light towers.
These towers, donated by Swakop Uranium for N$800,000, will illuminate the streets, creating a brighter, more welcoming environment and addressing growing concerns over crime after dark.
Nightfall often shrouds the streets of Wagdaar, turning the area into a hub for criminal activity.
The lack of street lighting has hindered people's ability to move freely and engage in community activities after dark.
The governor of the Erongo Region, Nathalia |Goagoses, described the installation as more than just new infrastructure.
She said the lights represent restored safety, dignity, and hope for residents, especially women and children who often felt unsafe walking in the dark.
"The government alone cannot meet all the demands of the society. Therefore, the government is calling upon all the stakeholders to assist the government to fill up some of the demands in our society, so clear hands for your caring government."
The project is funded by the Swakop Uranium Foundation, in partnership with ErongoRed and the Swakopmund Municipality.
It forms part of efforts to strengthen community safety and improve living conditions in vulnerable areas.
The solar towers are designed with high-efficiency panels and durable lithium batteries, capable of providing continuous lighting throughout the night.
The acting CEO of Swakop Uranium, Irvinne Simataa, said the project marks the start of a 10-year commitment to supporting community development programmes in Swakopmund.
"I want to inform you today on behalf of the Chairperson of the foundation that we will make a commitment to build two lighting towers every year for the next 10 years in this community."
The Erongo Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, noted that well-lit areas help reduce crime and promote community confidence.
"In our beloved town, allow me to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Swakopmund Uranium for this generous donation. Your contribution is a shining example of what can be achieved."
He praised the partnership, asserting that law enforcement alone cannot achieve safety.
