Children under the age of 10 from the Kavango East and West regions are being vaccinated against polio.
This comes after the type 2 poliovirus was detected from a sample that was collected from the Ndama Sewerage pond in Rundu last month.
In response, the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) is now embarking on a special polio vaccination campaign from 15 to 18 December 2025, targeting all children under the age of 10, regardless of previous vaccination status.
Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka vaccinated the first of a group of children during the campaign's launch in Rundu…
Delivering a statement on behalf of the World Health Organisation's (WHO) country representative, Roselina De Wee, said WHO availed N$2,1 million towards the campaign.
"That is for paying allowances for health workers and vaccinators as well as for community vehicles. I would like to sincerely appreciate our frontline health workers and volunteers. Your dedication, door-to-door efforts and commitment are the backbone of this campaign. As part of our collaborative support to the government, vaccines were provided free of charge through the global polio eradication initiative presented by Dr Loveday here today."
The MoHSS is requesting parents, caregivers and community leaders to support the campaign to ensure that every child is reached.
The vaccinators consist of fixed and mobile teams, while some will be going house to house in both Kavango regions.
Namibia has been polio-free since 2006.
