United States authorities say Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro faces criminal charges linked to drug trafficking and weapons offences in the United States.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Maduro has been indicted in New York.

Prosecutors allege he conspired with other Venezuelan officials and armed groups to move cocaine into the United States.

The indictment accuses Maduro of narco-terrorism conspiracy, among other charges.

The Drug Enforcement Administration says the alleged actions took place over several years while Maduro held senior government positions in Venezuela.

Maduro has denied the allegations and previously said the charges are politically motivated.

The Venezuelan government has rejected the authority of U.S. courts over its president.

The Associated Press and Reuters report that the charges remain unresolved, as Maduro has not appeared before a U.S. court.
