Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus has officially inaugurated the Ehomba network tower, a project funded through the Universal Service Fund of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), with Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) serving as the implementing partner.

Ehomba is located approximately 100 kilometres north of Opuwo in the Epupa Constituency of the Kunene Region.

In her inaugural remarks, Theofelus described the launch as a significant milestone in the implementation of long-awaited initiatives under the Communications Act.

She said the tower forms part of the government’s commitment to expanding connectivity to underserved and remote communities.

The minister revealed that it took nearly ten years to realise the Ehomba network tower, as the process required securing adequate funding and ensuring that the infrastructure was capable of supporting advanced technology.

She added that the successful completion of the project was made possible through the collaboration of various partners and stakeholders, to connect the Ehomba community to reliable communication services.

According to Theofelus, improved connectivity will enable residents to access opportunities, markets, education, and other essential services that can significantly improve their livelihoods.

At the event, 100 cellphones were handed over free of charge to top-performing learners from Ehomba and Oruwe Combined Schools, as well as some community members.

The devices are intended to promote digital literacy, effective communication, and e-learning.

Theofelus urged beneficiaries to use the devices responsibly and ethically, describing them as vital tools for supporting livelihoods, entrepreneurship, safety, and improved academic performance.

Additionally, the two schools will benefit from free 25 Mbps Wi-Fi connectivity for a period of seven years, provided through the newly established network tower.
