Concerns regarding the quality of mathematics teaching and learning have come to the forefront in the Kavango West Region, as educators and stakeholders reflect on the academic results for 2025.
At an engagement held in Nkurenkuru Town, a teacher from ELCIN Nkurenkuru High School, Cleshia Sarimana, emphasised the importance of practical teaching in mathematics.
He also proposed making practical assessments mandatory during teacher recruitment to guarantee quality and readiness.
However, some teachers raised concerns about the design of the curriculum, saying it does not reflect real-world mathematical applications, which could hinder students' ability to apply mathematical concepts in everyday situations.
Others argued that making mathematics a compulsory subject may not be the best approach.
Education stakeholders say addressing gaps in teacher training, curriculum design and classroom realities will be key to improving mathematics performance across all levels in the region.
