The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and the United Nations are deepening their partnership with a focus on youth engagement, accurate storytelling, and development communication.

During a meeting with the UN Resident Coordinator, NBC Director General Menesia Muinjo emphasized the importance of consistently including young people in national discussions and tailoring news, including UN development messages, for youth audiences who increasingly do not follow traditional television news.

Muinojo proposed developing a structured collaboration framework to facilitate timely coverage of UN activities, including content in local languages.

“We may not have enough teams, but it is vital to have dedicated personnel ensuring that the UN and its specialized agencies are covered effectively. This is a great opportunity to contribute to national goals outlined in NDP6 and regional initiatives through SADC and SABA,” she said.

UN Resident Coordinator Hopolang Phororo praised NBC’s coverage of UN programmes and expressed interest in expanding cooperation, highlighting the 2024 UN Cooperation Framework aligned with NDP6. Phororo emphasized the need for accurate media coverage of key discussions and Namibia’s regional leadership on gender-based violence and youth unemployment.

She suggested exploring new ways to engage young people in conversations about their hopes and challenges, including unemployment, in their languages.

The partnership aims to expand radio programming, content production in local languages, and strengthen journalist training on sensitive topics.
