Namibia delivered a competitive performance in the team stroke play event at the Africa Region 5 Golf Championship in Eswatini, finishing fourth after three rounds of competition against some of Southern Africa's top golfing nations.
Namibia's national golf team delivered a strong performance at the Africa Region 5 Golf Championship held in Eswatini from 6 to 8 May.
The tournament featured three rounds of 18 holes, bringing together some of Southern Africa's top golfing talent.
Namibia was represented by Todd Parker, Likuis Nande, Kyle Johnson, and Wensley Hoseb, competing against teams from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, hosts Eswatini, and South Africa.
In the team stroke play category, Namibia finished fourth, two strokes behind Zimbabwe, which secured third place. Zambia finished second, while South Africa won the championship.
Namibia's number one golfer, Likuis Nande, was in strong contention during the opening rounds. He entered the final round tied for second place at three under par, trailing South African leader Judd Sundelson.
However, a difficult third round saw Nande card a three-over-par score, dropping him to sixth place overall.
Kyle Johnson also impressed in the final round, recording a three-under-par performance to finish seventh overall in the individual standings.
"Overall, the tournament was very competitive, and our players showed character throughout all three rounds. We had a strong start and remained in contention for a podium finish until the final day. Although we finished fourth, the experience gained will help prepare our golfers for bigger competitions ahead. Kyle Johnson and Likuis Nande both performed well, and we are proud of the team's effort," Gurirab said.
Gurirab also confirmed that Namibia will host next year's Africa Region 5 Golf Championship, with focus now shifting to the All-Africa Championship later this year.
"We are excited that Namibia will host the next Africa Region 5 Golf Championship. It is a big opportunity for us to grow the sport locally and showcase our ability to host international tournaments. Right now, our focus also shifts to the All-Africa Championship later this year, where we hope to continue improving and competing at the highest level."
For now, Namibia's golfers will turn their attention to upcoming continental competitions as preparations continue for the All-Africa Championship later this year, while the country also gears up to host the Africa Region 5 Golf Championship next year.
