President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says she is satisfied with the progress made by the green schemes in Kavango East since her visit to the region in 2025.
The president was on a two-day visit to various government-owned farms in Kavango East, which concluded on Tuesday.
The president visited the Uvhungu-Vhungu, Shadikongoro and Ndonga Linena green schemes.
"I have to come back and supervise and really see the progress that has been made since my last visit. That's why it's important, so that I see the progress and so encourage those who are involved to know that what they are doing matters to this country so that they can do better for the benefit of everybody."
Her last visit was nine months ago. She then prepared an urgent cabinet submission where she made recommendations that needed immediate intervention.
"They all appreciated it, as they were saying, after your visit, we managed to get this and this and this, and now we have improved in our production. Then I said from now I must be visiting these green schemes every year."
The president elaborates on some of the improvements.
"Ndonga linena, Shadikongoro, where I was this morning, and even Uvhungu Vhungu. You realise that they are all talking about all their centre pivots being under irrigation, and they were all planted for summer crops. The unfortunate part is the weather, which created problems for some of the green schemes."
Wet weather conditions are just some of the causes that led to a delayed harvest, but despite the challenges, the President says the progress is noticeable.
"By and large, I can tell you that I am satisfied with what they have done," expressed Nandi-Ndaitwah.
The president is now calling on Namibians to invest in agriculture, even if it means having a small garden at home.
"We need to produce our own food, so I'm going back happy," she stated.
