The achievements and stories of Namibia's Paralympic athletes took centre stage at the launch of a book titled "No Obstacle is Too Great to Overcome - Paralympic Athletes of Namibia" in Windhoek.
The book launch, organised by the Sport on the Move Foundation, took place at the Project Room on Crohn Street. The publication documents the journeys of Namibian Paralympic athletes and their guides, highlighting their experiences and achievements in sport.
Sports enthusiasts attending the event had the opportunity to view an Olympic medal, while also exploring Paralympic medals and other sporting memorabilia on display. The launch seeks to recognise athletes who have represented Namibia at international competitions and to encourage future generations to pursue their sporting goals.
Para athlete Ananias Shikongo touched on the challenges that affect them as athletes, especially with major international competitions on the horizon.“We are facing the Commonwealth Games this year, then the Los Angeles Games, so we are getting ready. We just need our sponsors, the government, and corporate companies to see the importance of people with disabilities in the country,” Shikongo said.
Meanwhile, Johannes Nambala highlighted the importance of guides, noting that their critical role on the track deserves equal recognition.“When we talk about the athletes, we are also going to talk about the guides because without them, there is no athlete. When the athlete is rewarded for their performance, the guides must also be rewarded because it motivates them,” Nambala said.
On his part, guide Sam Shimanda commended the government and key stakeholders for their continued support.
“Most of the time it's the government supporting us. Especially when we win a medal, the government makes sure that what the guide gets is what the athlete gets. Those are the ones supporting us,” Shimanda said.
The author says the book captures personal stories that show how dedication, perseverance, and belief have helped athletes overcome challenges and achieve success in their sporting careers.
