As the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation celebrates its 35th anniversary this month, MTC Dome Sport Development Officer Jarrod Kisting said the broadcaster has played a role in promoting sport in Namibia through its coverage over the past three decades.
In an interview with NBC Sport News, Kisting said the broadcaster has played a role in bringing sport to the public, ensuring that Namibians are informed about developments across various sporting codes.
He said coverage has helped bring communities together by encouraging support for local athletes competing in different sporting disciplines.
Kisting added that television exposure gives young people hope and belief when they see Namibian athletes in action.
"I think we have more knowledge of our sport because of NBC's extensive coverage. So I think that in the 35 years, NBC has been essential in making people aware and in creating togetherness as a nation, because I think the more coverage we get, the more people are coming together to support our nation in whichever sport code our athletes participate in, whether it be soccer or netball or rugby or athletics. NBC has done an impressive job in making sure that Namibians are made aware of what's happening in sport in our country.”
According to Kisting, children who watch athletes on NBC are inspired to dream and believe they can also represent the country through dedication and hard work.
He also highlighted MTC Dome sprinter Matthew Coetzee as an example of an athlete whose determination has been strengthened by following NBC's coverage of athletics and national competitions.
“You know, it's amazing what that can do for a child because it creates belief. You are creating a vision for someone. I mean, look, you see Peter Shalulile on TV; NBC just brought you this game of Sundowns, and those kids are watching that game thinking that they can definitely be the next Peter Shalulele. So it's very important. It's essential to create belief, to create a vision, to just instill inspiration in kids, to make sure that, you know, if they really want to and if they're willing to go the extra mile and to work hard for what they want, then it's definitely achievable.”
Kisting thanked the corporation for its continued commitment to informing the nation and inspiring future generations through sport.
