The Oruuano Churches Gobabis branch engaged local young people on challenges such as alcohol abuse and drug abuse and peer pressure, amongst other factors affecting their progress.

The pastor of Oruuano Church at Gobabis, Platinie Katjaoha, stressed that churches have a critical role to play in shaping the lives of young people.

Katjaoha added that alcohol and drug abuse have become a serious challenge amongst the youth, and it will require a multifaceted approach to assist young people so that they can become meaningful citizens.

"I think we have that role as a church even today to be that motivational institution or a guiding institution to bring our communities together to empower our community with the necessary information and to give that confidence to fight the challenges of the day."

Former Gobabis Mayor Melba Tjozongoro advised young people about the importance of being disciplined and committed members.

"To know yourself better is very vital because this allows you to be known well by others, and those characters help you to be strong and not to allow other people to own you."

The chairperson of the Oruuano Gobabis branch, Tjinouhona Kokati, also encourages the young to become responsible citizens.

"A prayer without discipline produces little action. Self-discipline is a bridge between where you're now and where God wants you to be. With self-discipline, you don't need your mother or father to discipline you, as God has placed gifts and the ability to test the potential inside every young person, and potential alone is not enough."

A young resident of Gobabis, Kongus Mungendje, welcomed the initiative taken by the church on engaging the group.

"This will allow me to know and to set my future so it becomes great with discipline and to stay away from drugs, and the other reason why I came here is because it's not like Mom told me to come."
