The Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has warned against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the expense of the creatives.
Dino Ballotti, made referrence to some financially able organisations, including state owned institutions that use AI posters instead of paying capable graphic designers.
Ballotti made the remarks at the launch of the Creative Industry Guide 2026 National Mapping Campaign.
“There was a call of expression, you recall that conversation we had, for a logo, but for free. What nonsense is that? Yeah, and forgive me. It's really not with any disrespect. We cannot only be using AI and chat with people, they cannot be using AI posters. They must empower the guys, the creators that are creating these posters. Similar to we had a competition, we, the Cricket Namibia. It was a competition for a song. No, no Cricket Namibia, sorry. The NNOC, we have many hats, right? It's at the Cricket ground, that's why Cricket. So the National Namibia Olympic Committee, there was a prize for someone to create a song for their recent Commonwealth Games. And I think the prize money was decent. I think it was N$20,000, it was a fair amount. And they told me when we came there, that more than half of the submissions were AI generated. They immediately excluded those AI generated songs.”
