Namibia today joins the international community in marking World Space Week under the theme “Rocket Revolution”, highlighting the growing role of space science and technology in addressing global challenges and advancing human development.

Space technology has become increasingly important in areas such as communication, weather forecasting, agriculture, disaster management, navigation and climate monitoring.

As part of the celebrations, European Space Agency astronaut Dr. Matthias Maurer is visiting Namibia to strengthen connections between Namibia and the European scientific and space community, while inspiring young people to explore opportunities in science, technology and innovation.

During his visit, Maurer is expected to engage with approximately 8,000 learners and students in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Ongwediva and Oshakati.

Delivering the keynote remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Deputy Executive Director for Research, Innovation and Training Dr. Lisho Mundia said space science and technology presents opportunities that transcend national borders.

Mundia said countries that invest in developing and harnessing space technology can unlock opportunities in innovation, education, economic development and regional development.
