A N$10 million from Custos Energy is set to support the construction of the University of Namibia's (UNAM) new campus at Walvis Bay, which will house the School of Maritime Science and Engineering.

The contribution will be made once the deal between Custos Energy and Chevron affiliate Harmattan Energy Limited is finalised.

The School of Maritime Science and Engineering will entail Navigation, Marine Engineering, and Safety, Health, and Environment.

UNAM Senate has already approved two degree programmes for the school - the Bachelor of Science in Maritime Navigation and the Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Honours.

The programmes are aimed at preparing graduates for international seafaring qualifications in line with International Maritime Organisation standards.

UNAM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Antwerp Maritime Academy in Belgium in August this year, with the academy serving as an academic partner.

CMB.TECH has been identified as the infrastructure partner for the project.

UNAM says it has identified land for the campus and has engaged the Walvis Bay Municipality, which is expected to formally confirm the land.

Welcoming the pledge, UNAM Vice Chancellor Professor Kenneth Matengu said the investment would bring the university closer to establishing a campus where students can train near the ports and industries they are expected to serve.

The Knowledge Katti Foundation has previously sponsored more than 120 students to attend university, with the latest pledge further strengthening its partnership with the UNAM Foundation.
