A member of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) in the National Assembly is calling for a subsidy to support farmers to produce more food for the country and for their own household consumption.
Vipuakuje Muharukua argued in his motion in parliament that Namibians, especially farmers, can be self-reliant if they are well supported to ensure food security and reduce reliance on imported food.
The PDM MP took time to motivate a submission which appears to be enjoying the attention of various parliamentarians.
The motion requires the legislature to give enough support, both materially and financially, to the country's farmers to engage in productive agriculture.
After visiting some parts of the Omusati Region, Muharukua says he saw the hardship endured by farmers in terms of food production, saying financial support from the government is required in the entire country.
He said Namibia and Angola have signed a treaty on water sharing and that Namibia should therefore utilise the free-flowing water from its neighbouring country for the benefit of agricultural production.
The PDM politician complained about the ailing Etunda Irrigation Project, saying besides the ample water available there, other assistance is still needed to ensure successful farming.
Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Minister Dr Albert Kawana welcomed the idea and called for funding.
PDM's McHenry Venaani also supported the motion and called on the agriculture ministry to ensure that all Namibian rivers and water sources are put to good use for production.
Venaani mentioned African countries such as Morocco, Egypt, and Ethiopia, amongst others, that have put up massive irrigation schemes along their rivers even though they have deserts similar to Namibia.
