The Freedomland suburb in Windhoek launched its own Neighbourhood Watch, following an increase in the number of criminal activities in the area.
The launch was witnessed by top police brass and the local political leadership.
In the past, residents walked freely without fear, be it day or night, to carry out their activities.
Some were even sleeping with their doors open when it was too hot.
But with the spate of crimes of different forms and sorts, including violent ones, this has become totally impossible.
Khomas Police Regional Commander, Commissioner David Indongo, welcomed the neighborhood initiative and appealed to the residents to work closely with the police by reporting any suspicious criminal activities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
He further urged the residents to join the Community Policing initiative, the only programme which can give them the power to apprehend suspects if need be.
John Pandeni Constituency Councillor, John Moonde, commended the community for the initiative but emphasised the need to address the root cause of crime.
Moonde revealed that the majority of those in captivity are youths, something he finds very worrisome.
