The Kunene Regional Council raised over N$500 thousand towards the regional development fund at a dinner in Outjo.
The Kunene Regional Development Fund was established 15 years ago with the purpose to solicit funds for learners in the Kunene Region who are from poor households.
The fund financed 83 youths since its inception at a cost of N$285 thousand.
Speaking at the dinner, the Chairperson of the Kunene Regional Council's Management Committee, Hendrik Gaobaeb said they aim to solicit more finances by initiating various fundraising activities.
Gaobaeb noted that the region is faced with challenges of school leavers who want to further their studies but can't because of a lack of funds.
The Funds patron, Education Minister, Anna Nghipondoka applauded the regional leadership and encouraged them to continue serving the community.
"This is a noble idea that demonstrates responsive leadership and hence allows me to commend the regional leadership for this initiative and encourage them to continue serving the communities. These efforts have a direct impact on addressing the above-stated challenges and would see an increase in youth enrollment at institutions of higher learning, improved universities, and vocational completion and graduation rate."
The National Students Organization President, Lucia Ndishishi whose speech was read on her behalf assured the council of their support.
NANSO Vice President, Luciano Kambala said "our presence here is to mark our willingness to work with Kunene Regional Development Fund to ensure that the beneficiaries of the fund receive holistic support that enables maximize academic output."
The dinner was held under the theme "Bridging towards equitable and quality education for financially disadvantaged Kunene youth."
