The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund is urging drivers to educate passengers on the use of fire extinguishers before embarking on their journey.
MVA's Injury Prevention and Crash Assessment Coordinator Daniel Mouton, who joined the police at the roadblock 17 kilometres to Otavi from Otjiwarongo, says it is commendable that drivers are observing traffic rules and regulations.
This includes adhering to the speed limit and using seat belts while the vehicle's lights and tires are also working and in good condition.
However, in case of an accident, Mouton says it is only the drivers who know how to operate fire extinguishers, while most passengers are clueless.
Mouton also says it is important for passengers to know where vehicles' emergency exits are.
He says passengers who carry children on their laps to avoid paying extra for seats are also endangering children's lives should an accident occur.
Mouton reminded passengers that seatbelts are there to keep them from being thrown out of a vehicle.
To report an accident, dial 9682, and to report reckless driving, dial 061 222 888.
