Africa regresses in attaining 2008 Declaration

Africa has regressed in attaining commitments made in the 2008 Declaration on Accelerating the Achievement of Water and Sanitation Goals. 

This is according to Namibia's Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein, who officially opened the 7th Africa Sanitation and Hygiene Conference at Swakopmund.

The five-day conference is a platform for technical and political dialogue with governments and stakeholders to address sanitation and hygiene challenges in Africa.

Tulipamwe Savings Group demand serviced land

The Tulipamwe Savings Group has demanded that the Walvis Bay Municipality allocate land to its members at portion 10 of Farm 37 on the outskirts of the town.

The group secretary, Lidker Moses, says the council has allocated unserviced land at Portion 12 to them, while the group prefers to reside at Portion 10, where there are services.

Moses says members have been demanding land at Farm 37 since 2016.

The regional leadership in 2015 identified Farm 37, a few kilometres east of the harbour town, as a solution to the land and housing backlog.

Walvis Bay youth advocate for ethical leadership

American legal expert Eric Casher and the youth at Walvis Bay are advocating for ethical leadership in Namibia.

A public lecture by City Attorney Eric Casher from the United States attracted youth leaders from the coast to learn about ethical leadership.

As an African American, Casher revealed that he was not a stern believer in the American government when he was young because his forefathers were excluded.

Government should be commended for good work done - Uutoni

Urban and Rural Development Minister Erastus Uutoni believes the government should also be commended when it does good and not just be permanently criticised.

Uutoni says it is unfair to accuse the government of not doing anything to develop Namibia since independence.

Making the remarks at the inauguration of a N$1,8-million government office at Wlotzkasbaken settlement, Uutoni believes the government is doing great work in some areas.

Youth encouraged to own land at Wlotzkasbaken Settlement

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has called on the Erongo Regional Council to ensure that young people can afford plots at the Wlotzkasbaken settlement.

There are a little over 100 houses in the coastal settlement of Wlotzkasbaken, a place where boundary fences or walls are not encouraged.

Located between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, the Erongo Regional Council has been busy dividing the land into plots to accommodate more people.

President Geingob visits Namibia's first green hydrogen plant

President Hage Geingob has visited Namibia's first state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant, refuelling station, and hydrogen academy at Walvis Bay.

Dr. Geingob arrived at the N$4 billion facility, located a few kilometres from the Walvis Bay International Airport.

The initiative is a joint venture between local companies Ohlthaver and List (O&L) Group and Belgium's CMBT Tech.

O&L Group Director for Innovation, Eike Krafft, explained to the president that construction has started following a groundbreaking ceremony last week.

Eagle Night Watch Security accused of not complying with affirmative action report

A subcontractor at the Husab Uranium Mine, Eagle Night Watch Security, has been accused of not complying with an affirmative action report submitted to the Employment Equity Commission.

Workers allege that Eagle Night Watch gives them one-month contracts without benefits, contrary to what the company stated in the report: that they are permanent employees with benefits.

A representative of the Revolutionary Union, Tuhafeni Petrus, and some workers say they discovered in 2022 that Eagle Night Watch Security is involved in fraudulent activities.

Resettled farmers in Erongo push hard to become commercial

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources says the majority of resettled farmers in the Omaruru and Karibib areas are putting in extra effort to become commercial despite water problems.

The committee visited about 10 farmers resettled by the government in the Erongo Region to assess their success and challenges.


Most resettlement farms visited at Karibib and Omaruru by the parliamentarians are run by women.

Ombara Manasse Zeraua from the Zeraua Traditional Authority is among the 58 farmers resettled by the government in Erongo.

Public and private sectors urged to empower the youth

The founder of the Finance Expo in Swakopmund has called on the public and private sectors to support platforms that empower young professionals and entrepreneurs.

Adulting 102, a financial logistics platform based in Swakopmund, has organised the first-ever finance exhibition. 

The event attracted financial institutions, entrepreneurs, and young professionals to network and showcase their products.

The founder, Zohlanga |Gaseb says young professionals and entrepreneurs struggle to access financial information.
