A staggering number of reported child abuse cases are piling up at the offices of the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare (MGEPESW).

Deputy Minister Bernadette Jagger says her ministry continues to collaborate with stakeholders, particularly the police and the prosecution, to ensure that victims receive the required care.

Within its limited human resources structure, Jagger says her ministry has managed to second social workers to the gender-based violence protection units in the |Khomas , Kavango East, Oshana, and Kunene regions.

At least four employees of a Chinese A-Ming Clothing shop at Divundu in the Kavango East Region claim to have been unfairly fired from work.

Employees said they were fired without warning.

The employees at the A-Ming shop have been at home for a week now, saying they still do not know why they were fired.

The employees stated that despite the long hours and alleged bad working conditions, they still want their jobs back. 

Rosvitha Dinyando, one of the employees and shop manager, says the N$1,000 they received monthly made a difference in their lives. 

The Shambyu Health Centre in the Kavango East Region still caters to the health needs of the community, despite a number of issues hampering quality service delivery.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Social Development, and Family Affairs engaged staff members at the centre to familiarise themselves with their concerns.

Despite the fact that the centre is plagued with a myriad of issues, regional leadership is convinced that most of the problems hampering quality service delivery are not unique to it alone.

Residents of Kayengona in Kavango East are concerned about the way 'day visitors' behave at some sections of the river.

They are worried that if the situation persists, it could have irreversible consequences for the area's biodiversity.

This is Kayengona Beach. During weekends, especially in the summer, various day visitors gather here for a good time.

But after all the fun and games, the visitors often leave the area in a mess.

It then becomes the responsibility of the nearby locals to clean up.

Kavango East Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo has called on the Dr. Alpo Mbamba Secondary School choir to take their new role as Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Ambassadors seriously.

The school choir, which recently won the Anti-Corruption song competition at Swakopmund, visited the governor's office to show off their trophy and N$25,000 cash prize.
 

Kavango East's Chief Dentist, Dr. Elizabeth Hausiku-Elago, says the region is benefiting from the various developments made in the dentistry field.

Dr. Hausiku-Elago was speaking during Oral Health Awareness week at Rundu.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about issues surrounding oral health and oral hygiene so various stakeholders can work together to achieve healthier mouths and happier lives.

Dr. Hausiku-Elago says residents of Kavango East have reaped the benefits of some of the dentistry-related developments.

Regional leadership in the Kavango East Region met with the business community to discuss how to better improve local economic growth and development.

Referred to as the Mayoral Business Forum, the platform brings the local business community under one roof to, amongst other things, foster strong bonds and promote a unified business spirit. This is particularly important ahead of one of the region's biggest events, the Rundu Annual Trade Fair, next month.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform officially handed over the Rundu abattoir to MeatCo yesterday.

The abattoir is intended to serve as a market for cattle and small stock farmers in the Kavango East, West, and surrounding regions.

The construction of the Rundu abattoir started in 2014 and was expected to be completed in 2017.
 
The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, stated that the outbreak of COVID-19 and disruptions in tourism and other economic activities delayed the completion of the abattoir.

People affected by leprosy in the Mashare Constituency of Kavango East say they are in need of various forms of assistance.

Residents in Mukwe and Ndiyona constituencies of the Kavango East Region are the latest to join the call for a revision of compensation paid to victims of human-wildlife conflict, as they engaged with members of the parliamentary standing committee on natural resources.

During the meeting, community members emphasised that they do not comprehend how the ministry arrived at the compensation amount, and they contend that their losses far exceed the payments they receive.
