Minister Kapofi warns that Police will enforce strict adherence to COVID-19 measures

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Frans Kapofi has warned that the Police will enforce strict adherence to COVID-19 measures after finding motorists and night-club owners violating the measures. The Minister joined a police-led patrol of the capital on Saturday night and saw people partying beyond curfew. About 60 revellers were found mingling without masks at a nightclub in Cimbebasia shortly after the start of the curfew. Khomas Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Joseph Shikongo ordered the crowd to disperse in 15-minutes or risk being arrested and fined. Shikongo told Minister Kapofi that the incident highlighted the need for uniform liquor licences. He stressed that special licences allowing bars and shebeens to operate until late were responsible for some violations. Commissioner Shikongo said all establishments should close at 22h00, including those whose licences normally allow them to stay open until 02h00 in the morning. The Police patrol arrested several people for outstanding traffic fines, driving while drunk and other traffic law violations. Kapofi said he was dismayed with the abuse of alcohol among young people and its impact on gender-based violence.
