South African President appoints Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo as the next Chief Justice of the country

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has decided to appoint Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, as the next Chief Justice of the country with effect from 1 April 2022. The President’s decision follows consultations with the Judicial Service Commission and leaders of parties in the National Assembly on four nominees for appointment as Chief Justice. With Justice Zondo assuming the position of Chief Justice, the position of Deputy Chief Justice will become vacant, and President Ramaphosa will nominate Justice Mandisa Maya for the position of Deputy Chief Justice. In February, South Africa embarked on an unprecedented process that involved public interviews of four candidates shortlisted for the position of the next Chief Justice by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), after which it recommended Justice Mandisa Maya.
