Lula da Silva has won Brazil's presidential runoff, defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and securing a fourth, non-consecutive term as president.

The result was confirmed by Brazil's electoral authority.

Supporters gathered along the city's iconic avenue to celebrate Lula's victory, waving flags and taking part in the festivities following the election.

According to the results released by the Superior Electoral Court, Lula obtained 51.79% of the valid votes to Bolsonaro's 48.21%, securing his fourth term leading the country.

At time of publication, Bolsonaro said he would not concede defeat and would seek an annulment of ‌the runoff - adding that a Supreme Court judge ruling to extend voting by two hours was 'unacceptable'.
