A lack of water and poor sanitation are affecting the quality of life for the less privileged residents of Swakopmund.
This was said by the Mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Namubes during the handing over of 57 mobile toilet facilities at DRC.
Namubes says the availability of these toilets will help fight diseases and preserve the health and well-being of the residents.
"The results of these poor personal hygiene practices often lead to exposure to diseases and unwanted illnesses. Therefore, as per our mandate to provide basic services to our community."
She has urged stakeholders to give back to the neighborhood and support efforts aimed at fighting poverty, as the municipality can only win this battle, through cooperation.
"Dear residents and esteemed beneficiaries, as we search for the most sustainable solutions, the community can use these portable toilets, right now, even a small donation makes a difference."
She also urged the beneficiaries to take care of facilities and to properly dispose of their trash inside skips rather than outside.
"Protect ourselves from being exposed to unsanitary situations. Sometimes we become the victims of our own issues. I can testify with some pictures of how we don't take good care of our own environment."
Residents also complained of walking kilometers to access water and are now appealing to the government to bring the provision of water closer to them.
