Swakopmund Municipality installs CCTV cameras

The Swakopmund Municipality has started to install security CCTV cameras at 15 identified crime hotspots.

This comes after the community raised concerns about the increasing crime in the coastal town.

At a recent meeting, Swakopmund residents fed up with crime asked the municipality to intervene.

Residents are particularly concerned about their safety and security, especially on dedicated paydays like the 20th, 25th, and 30th, where criminal activity spikes.

“We cannot sleep at night 12th, 1, 2, 3, and then you hear people screaming for help.”

Swakopmund prioritises service delivery

The Swakopmund Municipality has made progress in service delivery to all its residents.

This is evident through endeavours like allocating land for housing requirements and ensuring that the welfare of the community remains of utmost importance.

The municipality continues to explore innovative approaches to enhance the quality of life for all its residents.

More than 1300 residents of DRC Proper and DRC Wagdaar have been allocated land.

Swakopmund municipality's Project Shine receives donations

The Swakopmund municipality's Project Shine has received N$190,000 from various sponsors to keep the town and surrounding areas clean.

Since its launch in 2007, Project Shine has played a significant role in promoting cleanliness, recycling, and improving the social welfare of the Swakopmund community.

The town mayor, Dina Namubes, says through this project, residents are encouraged to dispose of their waste in a responsible way and be mindful of the problem that litter presents.

Swakopmund Municipality, German City of Giessen enter cooperation agreement

The Swakopmund Municipality and the City of Giessen in Germany have partnered with the aim to share knowledge and promote intercultural and multicultural relations between the two local authorities.
  
A few years ago, the Municipality of Swakopmund received a cooperation invitation from German City, Giessen.

The local council saw it as an excellent opportunity to exchange, share information and experience in a number of areas. 

57 mobile toilet facilities handed over at DRC

A lack of water and poor sanitation are affecting the quality of life for the less privileged residents of Swakopmund. 

This was said by the Mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Namubes during the handing over of 57 mobile toilet facilities at DRC.

Namubes says the availability of these toilets will help fight diseases and preserve the health and well-being of the residents.

"The results of these poor personal hygiene practices often lead to exposure to diseases and unwanted illnesses. Therefore, as per our mandate to provide basic services to our community."

Over 500 Swakopmund residents to own decent housing

Over 500 Swakopmund residents will now be able to own decent housing as the Swakopmund Municipality will embark on a process through which land ownership will be awarded to them.

This is part of the Swakopmund Municipality’s target to decongest 17,000 or more residents from the DRC informal settlement.

The project, which will benefit residents, mainly those living in the town’s informal settlements of DRC Proper and DRC Wagdaar, will commence early this year, according to the town’s Chief Executive Officer, Archie Benjamin, in his new year’s message.
