The Swakopmund Municipality and the City of Giessen in Germany have partnered with the aim to share knowledge and promote intercultural and multicultural relations between the two local authorities.

A few years ago, the Municipality of Swakopmund received a cooperation invitation from German City, Giessen.

The local council saw it as an excellent opportunity to exchange, share information and experience in a number of areas.

Key among the identified areas of cooperation were youth development with a special focus on libraries, economic development, town planning and urban gardening.

In a speech read on her behalf by councilor Claus-Werner Goldbeck, Swakopmund Town Mayor Dina Namubes said this was done in order to deepen global networks and city partnerships, integrate sustainable development goals into their projects, and explore the histories of Namibia and Germany.

"I was reliably informed that the exchange of ideas, the sharing of knowledge and the fostering of relationships took place during the visit. Today we have the delegation from the City of Giessen in our midst. They are here to experience, feel, and touch base on what Swakopmund has to offer and to further cement the relationship."

Swakopmund Municipality and the City of Giessen also launched a book exchange program.

Five cubicles that represent the United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals to were opened at the Mondesa library.

To create awareness, the two cities have prepared cubicles outside the library, both to serve as seating for library users, and to display and create awareness about all 17 SDGs.
