Vendors operating at the Omuthiya Open Market say they are disappointed with the town council for allowing the market to be in a deplorable state.

This market, located in the Capital of Oshikoto is popular with locals and travelers for selling delicacies, among them this braaied pigeon.

But what lurks in the background of this busy market and just a stone's throw away are these deserted open market stalls.

They have now been turned into accommodation facilities by homeless people.

Food is prepared in an open unhygienic area.

Moses Alpheus is one of the residents who is irked by this state of affairs at the open market.

Another concerned vendor is Lesheni Linus who sells mealies and cocktail tomatoes.

Linus wants the situation addressed as they are unable to do anything as vendors to contain the situation.

''The situation has deteriorated over the years due to people that leave in the open market. We have asked them to leave but they don't want and they do not even sell anything. We are in a problem because even our goods and other items are being stolen. This is not an accommodation facility, council should really come and inspect this place.''

Contacted for comment Omuthiya Mayor Johannes Ndeutepo says the vendors do not pay any fees to the council and therefore they have to maintain the area.

Ndeutepo says the open market does not belong to the council, adding that the only service they provide there is refuse removals on a weekly basis.
