The late Police Attaché to South Africa, Commissioner Christopher Nakanyala was buried at Uuyoka-Omulondo in the Oshikoto Region. 

The 59-year-old Nakanyala died in Pretoria last week.  


Nakanyala left Namibia into exile in 1976, the same year the joined the People Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN).

In 1977 received his first military training at Tobias Hainyeko training center in Lubango Angola.

He returned from exile in 1989 and joined NamPol in 1990 and he was the first cohort of officers who constituted the special field force components of the police in 1996.

He served in various portfolios including the head of the Special operation Sub-unit VIP Protection Unit and Omusati Regional Commander.

Nakanyala also serves as the Sub-Unit Commander and Sergeant at Arms of the Parliament Sub-Unit and a border guard unit commander responsible for the Zambezi Region and later the Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena and Omusati Regions.

The later Commissioner Nakanyala was conferred an official funeral by the Head of State Hage Geingob.

In a speech read on his behalf, Dr. Geingob said Nakanyala exhibited determination and patriotic spirit that defines the heroes and heroines who fought for the freedom of Namibia and its people.

"Although Commissioner Nakanyala is no longer with us, let's use his outstanding patriotic service and invaluable sacrifices as our inspiration and foundation on which we will continue to build a Namibia that is peaceful united, and inclusive. A Namibia where no one is left out and where all of us enjoy shared national prosperity".

Founding President Sam Nujoma send his message of condolences in a message read on his behalf.

"There are no words that can bring comfort at this time, but may your pain be relieved. May your hearts be eased, and may your tears be wiped dry. We are with you. We mourn with you and may you be granted fortitude during this time of bereavement".

Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba described the late Commissioner as a brave man and a man of significant decisions and plans.

"His bravery and commitment led to him being awarded in 2003, 2011, and 2020 with Namibian Police Force, service medals of service of 10th, 20th and 30th years respectively. In 2016 he was awarded a campaign medal in recognition of participation in peacekeeping operations and election observation missions". 

To his family, he was a man of magnitude, a provider, and a pillar.

"Our father was a force to be reckoned with, no matter what the world threw at him, what the people did or said he was always left standing, whether, under a bright or dim light, the world could never shake him," said daughter Frieda Nakanyala".
