A local church has decided to play its part in alleviating poverty and hunger by starting a food bank.

Deeper Fellowship Church - Namibia has started the Give Hope Food Bank in Partnership with the City of Windhoek.

Deeper Fellowship Church Namibia's Senior Pastor, Clive Willemse says the church decided to serve the City by feeding some of the many residents struggling to make ends meet.

Willemse says the increase in food prices is making life very difficult for some households.

"The Lord said to me, I want you to be involved in the city in food security because there are thousands of people that go to bed without food and that's the reason we are here."

The Church will be distributing these containers at various premises including other churches, corporate companies, retail shops and a number of other institutions.

The idea is for people to donate basic household goods which will then be shared with those in need.

"We will distribute food to all 15 constituencies. We have a partnership with the community development officer of the City of Windhoek so the Social Workers with respective Councillors will identify the people in need."

Windhoek Mayor, Joseph Uapingene is calling on various institutions to also join the cause.

"I want to encourage, not only the other churches but corporate companies and individuals to adopt this culture to serve the city and its people. It is a known fact that we as the elected officials and staff of the city cannot do it on their own. We need the support of the broader community. The serve the City Drive will foster a culture of ownership and take responsibility collectively as citizens."

The distribution of food will start next month.
