Swapo Party veteran parliamentarian Jerry Ekandjo has rejected the recent Supreme Court ruling on the issue of same-sex marriage, stating that it is unconstitutional in Namibia.

Motivating his motion rejecting this ruling in the National Assembly, Ekandjo argued that the Constitution, as drafted by its founding fathers at the Constituent Assembly, explicitly states that marriage should be between a consenting man and a woman.

Ekandjo further explained that during the drafting process, a question was raised regarding the allowance of same-sex marriage, and the response was a resounding and unequivocal no.

The Swapo Party MP further justified his position by stating that even if a certain country legalises the cultivation of marijuana in someone's backyard garden, it does not mean that the individual is allowed to come and smoke that marijuana in Namibia.

He, therefore, appealed to all members of parliament from all parties and both houses of the legislature to reject the calls for the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

The impassioned Ekandjo, therefore, called for the immediate tabling of a Private Members Bill to address this issue once and for all.

Ekandjo was also disturbed by how the Speaker of the House, Professor Peter Katjavivi, handled this motion, expressing doubt about his sincerity.
