A Bill that seeks to introduce amendments to existing regulations governing the livestock industry and its associated products took centre stage in the National Council today.

With Namibia's agricultural sector playing a pivotal role in the country's economy and the livelihoods of many citizens, the Livestock and Livestock Products Amendment Bill garnered significant attention and highlighted the importance of robust legislation to support the industry's growth and sustainability.

Supporters of the Bill underscored the necessity for updated regulations, arguing that they would bolster the sector's competitiveness, ensure food safety standards, and enhance livestock disease control measures.

These proponents emphasised the Bill's potential to fortify Namibia's position as a leading livestock exporter and contribute to the nation's economic prosperity.

Some are of the view that careful consideration must be given to avoid any unintended adverse consequences that may disproportionately affect vulnerable segments of the farming community.

The Livestock and Livestock Products Amendment Bill tackles a broad range of issues related to livestock, including animal health, the marketing and traceability of livestock products, and regulation of the industry's value chain.

It also aims to foster greater efficiency, promote best practises, and enhance compliance with international standards, ultimately positioning Namibia's livestock industry on a competitive global footing.
