Taxi drivers at Walvis Bay handed over a petition containing a number of concerns, including poor road conditions and perceived discrimination against Kuisebmund and factory-side road users.
Namibia holds the top rank among all SADC countries in terms of the best road conditions.
However taxi drivers in Walvis Bay believe this favorable status does not extend to the harbour town.
Against this backdrop, a group of cab drivers took to the streets, demanding improved road conditions within their area.
The taxi drivers have accused the local authority council of prioritising larger road maintenance projects for the town center while neglecting the needs of those residing in the Kuisebmund suburbs.
The group representative, Annanias Mbango said, "Majority of our clients are from kuisebmund, we have no choice but to use this road. We appreciate the work done at the intersection of hanna Mupetami road and Sam Nuyoma Avenue and we would like our local authority to extend such projects to kusibmund before the situation go out of hand."
They emphasized that such discriminatory behavior against the underprivileged population will not be accepted, urging the council to also direct its attention towards their area when it comes to road development.
The petition was received by the chairperson of the Walvis Bay management committee, Richard Hoaeb, on behalf of the local authority council.
"As we all know we all are struggling it's not something that has only started now it has been there for years and it's coming a long way yes the municipality is not silent or ignorant about it I will not go in dept. with the matter, as we all know there was a budget made for it ."
Hoaeb urged the town's residents to promptly settle their rates and taxes, saying if debts had been consistently paid on schedule, road upgrades would have been undertaken much earlier.
