The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration, Natangwe Ithete, has emphasised the necessity of revising and modernising the national railway system in a way that stimulates growth and development.

Ithete said this during a visit by the members of the standing committee to ||Kharas Governor Aletha Frederick.

The standing committee is currently conducting an oversight visit to assess the management of railway services, infrastructure, and facilities in the southern region.

"It is in the public interest and the interest of Namibians that we urgently find ways and means to review and modernise railway services, railway infrastructure, and facilities in our country. An efficient and effective modern service and rail connection will enable us to transport goods and cargo from our neighbouring landlocked countries to the ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz and move goods and cargo within the country. We owe it to citizens to provide fast and efficient rail transport."

On her part, ||Kharas Governor Aletha Frederick expressed concern over grievances regarding the employment conditions some TransNamib employees lodged with her office last week.

"It is very imperative that as much as we are building our infrastructure to be the best and use the best technologies, if the people that are going to utilise those infrastructures, especially the employees, are not happy, then it is a waste of resources, time, and energy."

The management of TransNamib also joined the courtesy visit the standing committee paid to the ||Kharas governor.
