The four-year-old girl from the Omaheke Region who was physically abused by her cousins is recovering well.

The Omaheke Governor, in company with some government officials and Standard Bank, visited the family to check on the girl's condition.

The girl from Ourunduwozondjima was mercilessly beaten by her three cousins, themselves minors, last month.

Her plight came to light after a video depicting her injuries was circulated this week.

In it, one would see scars almost all over the girl's body; her face was swollen, and she could not open either of her eyes.

There is also a big scar on her backbone from fire burns.

The mother explained that an aunt left the children at home when she went to another village to attend a funeral.

It was during that time that the children began fighting.

The children, aged six and 10, were reportedly forced to join in the beating against their will by the 12-year-old who threatened them.

The four-year-old was a visitor to the house only, but had been staying temporarily.

Today the girl is recovering, but her fingers are still broken and a wound sustained on her feet is still bandaged.

The mother said that they still visit a nearby health facility twice a week for her dressing.

"We have been up and down for the whole last month, and last Friday was when we were discharged from the hospital. I'm very grateful for all the officials who assisted us, and we told them to take good care of the girl. I'm thankful to you all who came to visit us."

Nganate condemned the incident. "We are happy to see that the child is quite busy healing from her wounds. She is such a brave girl that encourages us very well, but we're also joined by Standard Bank, who heard about this cry and then decided that they should also join in bringing some goodies to the parents so that they can lessen the burden of food, and we came with cash to assist them in visiting the clinic."

The four-year-old has since been returned to her biological mother, but Nganate said investigations are still ongoing.

The victim's family is also receiving psychological support from officials of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare.
