The commemoration of the 97th White Flag Day took place at Omaruru in the Erongo Region.

The day is meant to celebrate special moments and share the rich history with the upcoming generation.
The empty streets of Omaruru were filled with the sounds of traditional chanting and horse hooves clopping on the tarred road, echoing miles through the streets early on sunrise.

They also paid homage at their ancestral graves, received blessings, and were sprinkled with water as a form of cleansing. The first ombara of the Zeraeua Traditional Authority, Christian Wilhelm Zeraeua, who died in November 1886, is also buried here.

White Flag Day is a way of celebrating glorious heritage, culture, and traditions. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Professor Peter Katjavivi, advised young people to learn from events of this magnitude.

Katjavivi wants to see youth empowered academically.

Speaking on the Ovaherero-Nama Genocide Committee, PDM President McHenry Venaani said victims of the genocide deserve a seat at the negotiation table to ensure total inclusion.

He also called for an international conference to be hosted by Namibia where descendants, including those in the diaspora, to be represented for a fairer conclusion.

"We should not be plural in our conduct as leaders in this country. Every human being who has played a particular role, if it is good for the country, should be recognized as such. We should not be childish and ask who started what and who did what we all know. One cannot deny history."
