The community members of Otjimbingwe and surrounding farms hosted a meeting to address serious issues hampering socio-economic development at the settlement.
Otjimbingwe is a settlement in the Erongo Region of central Namibia, with approximately 8,000 inhabitants.
Among the issues that were discussed were the upgrading of the road between Karibibb and Otjimbingwe, the allocation of residential plots at the settlement, a shortage of water and electricity supply, high youth unemployment, and the lack of an ambulance.
"Now our appeal all the years to the central government through the governor's offices through the councillors is to extend the boundaries of the settlement by paying the farms next to the settlements; it will be helpful in terms of the drought situation," said Rudolf Kahingunga, from the Otjimbingwe Farmers Association.
Close to 80% of young people are unemployed and unskilled.
The high unemployment rate at the settlement leads to young people engaging in unlawful activities such as stock theft.
The community of Otjimbingwe has agreed to take further steps to remove Tsoaxudama Traditional Authority Chief Josua Seibeb, who was coronated on November 12, 2022.
The community members believe that the lack of unity among traditional leaders impacts development at the settlement.
They say that the chief is forever unavailable during community meetings to hear the struggles of his people since he was put in power.
Tsoaxudama Traditional Authority Chief Josua Seibeb said that he will respond to the community in due course.
