The regional commander of police in the Kavango East Region, Commissioner Johanna Ngondo, says she is determined to get rid of unscrupulous members of the force.

She was speaking about community engagement between the police and the community.

"There was a time a police officer used to commit crimes, and one of the community members called me while I was in Windhoek. This police officer had been continuously committing crimes of stock theft, and he'd use a police vehicle or van to carry stolen stock, and then he would wash it at the river. Everyone was watching and knew what he was doing, but none of them said anything. I was called while I was in Windhoek and gave it to one of my trusted people because I also have my own trusted people. It took me two days, and the police officer was behind bars, and I want those types of people to come out of the community."

NamPol's regional head also touched on how some community members are reluctant to report police officers who have committed certain crimes.

"There was an issue—a domestic violence issue—in the house where a lady knew me as a person and as a police officer and called and informed me that she was being abused by one of our police officers and then the mother had a problem that she should not report the police officer because they will lose bread and food in the house. This is the situation we are facing in the Kavango East Region."

She urged the community to assist the police in this regard.

"We want to root criminality out of the community as well as in the force. That is my advocacy as a regional commander."
