Defence Ministry recaps 2023 activities

The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) has participated in several international peacekeeping missions this year.

The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Frans Kapofi, spoke about these during a briefing at the Government Information Centre, where he presented the ministry's activities carried out this year.

As part of its international obligations, Namibia is currently participating in the UN Mission in South Sudan and Mozambique and has visited the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on a reconnaissance mission to observe the volatile situation there.

Rundu experiences rise in crime

Rundu has seen an increase in certain crimes in 2023 compared to 2022, according to statistics provided by the Kavango East Regional Police.

The statistics compare various crimes between January and December 2022 and January and September 2023.

Even though the whole of 2022 reported 408 cases of housebreaking and theft, by September this year, that figure had already reached 488.

Theft stood at 258 cases last year, but by September 2023, it had increased to 398.

Michael Amushelelo and Dimbulukweni Nauyoma acquitted

Magistrate Linus Samunzala has acquitted activists Michael Amushelelo and Dimbulukeni Nauyoma of all charges, citing poor quality and multiple contradictions in the evidence of state witnesses.

Amushelelo had spent close to seven months in incarceration since his arrest for independence this year.

The activist, along with Nauyoma and Inna Hengari, were arrested and faced several charges, including malicious damage to property.

Swakopmund resident dies from food poisoning

One person died while six others were treated for what is suspected to be food poisoning at Swakopmund.

The police, however, said the exact cause of the poisoning is unknown, as the postmortem will only be conducted tomorrow.

According to the police report, the family of seven, between the ages of two and 30, prepared dinner on Saturday of porridge, oshikandela milk, and already-cooked pieces of chicken bought from a local supermarket.

It is alleged that in the early morning hours of Sunday, the wife went to the bathroom because of stomach pain.
