The Anti-Corruption Commission has appealed for an international coordinated effort in the investigation of money laundering-related organised crimes.

The appeal was made at the commemoration of Anti-Corruption Day at Katima Mulilo.

The Anti-Corrutiption Commission (ACC) marked the day in different regions to create awareness for people to understand what the consequences of corruption could be and their role thereto.

In a speech read on his behalf, ACC's Director General, Paulus Noa, emphasized that the fight against corruption requires the involvement and participation of every person.

"No person's role is less crucial when it comes to preventing and combating corruption. We all become victims of corruption, and therefore we should all be part of the effects of corruption. The convention is a global instrument and urges all sectors of society to actively stand up against corruption."

Namibia has so far established a strong bond with the Botswana Anti-Corruption Agency and has a Memorandum of Understanding, which paves the way for a coordinated effort in combating cross-border crimes.

Botswana's Director General for Operations in the Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime, Priscilla Israel, says the joint efforts will go a long way in combating corruption.

"I am happy to announce that we have achieved all the obligations of the decisions of the BNC, and the implementation of the MoU for the year 2023/24 is at an advanced stage between our agencies in our effort to operationalise the MoU. We all know the evils of corruption and how it easily changes jurisdiction. We are more than ready to assist Namibia and other states in restoring possession of the proceeds of corruption."

Zambezi Governor Alufea Sampofu stressed that corruption distorts markets and increases costs for companies and ultimately customers.

"The cooperation of civil society is also needed to resist corruption, build cultural integrity, and deliver change. Policies must be developed to support the poor, women, and minorities by increasing public participation in decision-making."

The day was commemorated under the theme "Uniting the World Against Corruption".
