Gosbert Sikerete Mandema, the former mayor of Rundu, was buried in Rundu today.

A veteran of the Liberation Struggle, Mandema passed away in Windhoek last month at the age of 77, receiving the honor of a state funeral bestowed by President Hage Geingob.

Mandema played a pivotal role in Namibia's liberation struggle and was a prominent figure in political mobilisation during the early 1960s, particularly in the Kavango and Zambezi regions.

Throughout the years, Sikerete held various positions within the Swapo Party in the Kavango Region, serving as Chairperson, Regional Coordinator, and Regional Mobilizer, among others.

Reports indicate that Mandema used his home as a refuge for liberation combatants, urging his family and community to support them. Additionally, he introduced youth to politics through sports.

Despite enduring hardships, including harassment and imprisonment, Sikerete remained unwavering in his commitment to the country, earning him descriptions such as "son of the soil," a hero, and a man of his word.

During recent gatherings, friends and family expressed that they will miss Mandema's wisdom, generosity, and inspirational nature the most.

Survived by his wife, five children, 22 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, the late Mandema leaves behind a legacy of dedication to his country.
