The Office of the Prime Minister is expected to provide an update to the Cabinet on the drought relief programme next month.

This was confirmed by the Executive Director, I-Ben Nashandi, as Cabinet resumes in February.

The update to Cabinet would outline the progress and challenges in the implementation of the drought relief programme, barely four months after its roll-out.

The government initiated the programme late last year following a Livelihood Vulnerability Assessments and Analyses report that declared more than 600,000 households food insecure.

The programme provides food assistance, livestock support, and water to drought-affected households, rolled out at a cost of N$892.4 million.

Low to sporadic rainfall received in some parts of the country has farmers and households worried over the impact of the prolonged dry spells.

The progress report to Cabinet is further informed by consistent updates from regional leadership in all 14 regions.

Executive Director Nashandi does not foresee any additional intervention that may emanate from the Cabinet update.

This, Nashandi says, is because OPM is implementing the drought relief programme as directed so far.
