Zambezi Region Governor, Alufea Sampofu, says despite below-average rainfall received in the region compared to previous years, there is a need to cultivate as many crop fields as possible.

Sampofu encourages all residents to ensure they put bread on the tables of their families.

The Zambezi Governor called on those living in the flood plains, especially in Kabbe South and North constituencies, to be on alert for annual floods.

He observed that, as the levels of the Zambezi River start to rise, people ensure they are not caught off guard.

"Let's not wait for handouts from the government; let's work hard to produce our own food for our families, and also, as we know about the Zambezi River, whether we have some rain or not, we always have floods in the region. So the Zambezi River has started rising, and we call upon our people in the flood-prone areas to always check the water. We should not wait until all flood plains are already flooded; that is when they move their livestock."

Sampofu believes that the timely moving of livestock to higher grounds will lessen the burden on cattle farmers in terms of the risks associated with floods, such as waterborne diseases, snakes, and crocodiles.

He stressed that the government alone cannot solve all these challenges, hence the need for the public to become involved in mitigating the impact of natural disasters.

The Zambezi Governor has also cautioned residents, especially those living along the Zambezi River bordering Zambia, of a cholera outbreak in that country that has claimed several lives already.

"As we know, we are neighbours. There are free movements of people. Our border is open 24 hours a day. Let's make sure that we keep our environment clean. No water is needed somewhere else near our houses. Where there is water, let's take some soil and cover such a place. We should wash our hands all the time after using the toilet. Our food should also be well protected, covered from flies and everything."

He says there is a need for people to ensure that their environment is well protected while personal hygiene is prioritized.
