Naingopo Primary School in the Kavango West Region, situated over 80 km south of Rundu, is in urgent need of an infrastructural upgrade.

Community members feel that the school has been neglected for many years, with not even the bare necessities of a school.

Naingopo Primary School was established in 1978 and has a learner population of 75 with two teachers.

The school operates from pre-primary to grade three, using a multi-grade teaching method.

Pre-primary and grade one are taught in a corrugated iron sheet classroom, while grades two and three are taught in a dilapidated classroom made of bricks, which is also used as an office at the same time as a storeroom.

The school has two pit latrines.

Apart from the delapitated school structure, the school board chairperson, Basiluse Haimbili, raised concerns over learners walking long distances to school.

He says the distance contributes to the learner's academic performance, as they wake up as early as four o'clock so that they make it on time to school.

He says that due to the long distance walked, the learners end up sleeping in class as they reach school tired.

Basiliuse says the long distances have led to many children dropping out of school at an early age.

He asks if the ministry can also look into the area where the school is located to bring it closer to the people.

Contacted for a comment Director of Education in the Kavango West Region, Pontianus Musore, says the school has not been neglected, but finance has been the obstacle.

He says according to the directorate's plan, within three months they will start with the construction of two classrooms and one storeroom.

Musore highlighted that the major fear of schools in the inland is the fact that people are nomadic, and it will be a waste of resources if permanent structures are constructed and the people relocate.
