Ovaherero and Ovambanderu communities gathered at Swakopmund to commemorate victims of the 1904–1908 genocide.

Speaking at the commemoration, one of the leaders of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority, Hoze Riruako, stated that Ovaherero, Vambanderu, VaTjimba, VaHakaona, and the Nama people are a great nation destined not only to rewrite their history but to improve and restore the hope of their people.
 
Dr. Riruako said these communities are living proof that they are survivors.
 
As children of survivors such as Salome Katjimune, people born of those who stood tall and firm gave their last to forestall Germany's occupation, he says.
 
The commemorative event, which was preceded by a reparation walk through the streets of Swakopmund, was also attended by the mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Nanubes, leaders from different traditional authorities, and some MPs.
 
The annual event paid homage to thousands of Ovaherero and Nama who died during the Nama Ovaherero Genocide of 1904–1908.
 
Men, women, and children died in concentration camps due to hunger and all forms of slavery at the hands of German soldiers.
