Parents of learners at Keetmanshoop-based Minna Sachs Primary School disrupted classes for nearly two hours on Monday.

They protested at the school gate and blocked the newly appointed principal from entering the school premises.

The latest development follows a protest by the parents last week, demanding the reversal of the appointment of the principal.

They demanded that the position of the principal be re-advertised and that a person fluent in Khoekhoegowab be considered for the position since learners attending the school are from a predominantly Khoekhoegowab-speaking community.

Demanding a satisfactory response to their petition from education authorities, the parents vowed to prevent the appointed principal from taking office.

Some teaching staff remained outside the school premises with the principal in solidarity, and police were called to intervene.

Classes at the school only resumed after police escorted the principal to safety.
